WHITE WALLS
ALL WEEKEND LONG I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT HOUSES. MOST OF THE HOUSES THAT ARE AVAILABLE ARE THE VINTAGE 60'S AND 70'S ERA, WHICH I PREFER. THEY HAVE A LOT OF CHARACTER COMPARED TO 80'S AND 90'S ERA. DURING THE 6O'S AND 70'S, ESPECIALLY IN TEXAS, THE HOUSES WERE FINISHED OUT WITH THAT LOVELY(NOT) WOOD PANELING, SHORT RANCH STYLE CEILINGS, AND SMALL WINDOWS.
PRETTY BAD ISN'T?
SO, AS I AM WALKING THROUGH THE HOUSES, I THINKING "I AM SERIOUSLY GOING TO HAVE TO PAINT EVERYTHING WHITE". WHITE WILL OPEN UP THE ROOMS AND MAKE THEM NOT FEEL SO CAVE LIKE. SO I AM REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE CHALLENGE OF FRESHENING UP AND DECORATING A 60'S,70'S HOUSE. HERE ARE SOME OF MY FAVORITE ROOMS WITH WHITE WALLS THAT I AM USING FOR INSPIRATION...

That last picture from Cottage Living is one of my very favorites!
When we were looking for houses, we were in the same boat as you. Part of the reason that we bought the house that we did was because the living/dining/kitchen were all pretty open to one another, and the living room had nice vaulted ceilings - which made a huge difference.
Good luck with your search!! I know it can be frustrating.
